A light-minute is the distance light travels in a minute, which is
approximately eighteen million kilometers (eleven million miles). To give a
sense of scale, Earth is about eight light-minutes from the Sun. The
distance from Earth to Mars, of course, is always changing because of the
two planets' differing orbits around the Sun. Mind you, the Earth's
elliptical orbit guarantees that the distance from Earth to the Sun is
always changing as well, but that's a much smaller change than is seen in
the distance from Earth to Mars.
P.S. Scramjet!
