Quantum decoherence is a weird part of quantum mechanics. In its most basic
explanation, a particle decoheres when it collapses to one state due to
interaction with its environment. Causing a large number of particles to
take on two or more states, then collapsing them, would wreak havoc on
matter.
A decoherence cannon is the kind of device which would be useful for
destroying large objects composed of smart nanotech. Which then engenders
the question, why would the Solar Navy have a secret weapon that's really
useful against technology only the Martians have...?

I'm rather pleased that Chaucer is even capable of a befuddled expression, much less an endearingly befuddled one, considering he doesn't have much in the way of moving parts.
I'd also like to point out one nice thing about this part of the storyline from an art perspective: each page the Qin is getting easier and easier to draw...
