(Jon sez:) Polite and rational discussion plus imminent threat of external physical attack equals persuasive argument. Or, to put it another way, "You get more with a kind word and a two-by-four than you do with just a kind word." Benjamin's general attitude towards Chaucer and Pindar on this page is how I hope a reasonable society would react to intelligent machines if such are possible to create. Although, of course, there are ten thousand years of history which say that I'm betting on the wrong horse and humanity will enslave intelligent robots as soon as we create them. Of course, it says something very negative about Venusian society in general and Doctor Haas in specific that Pinder and Chaucer don't expect to be treated like people, and that they are so impressed when Benjamin accords them basic respect. |
(Mark sez:) Now you get to see what my art looks like when I've been getting about five hours of sleep a night for the last week or two. It's not pretty. Along those lines, my work conditions which have prevented the last two Thursday comics are probably going to continue until late this month if not the end of it, so it's quite possible more Thursdays will be missed. I do invite you to check back on a regular schedule, but don't be shocked if you don't see a new comic. (We'll put up a message indicating the status in that case.) |
