Your Writer: Jon Kilgannon It's been a spectacularly hectic weekend for me. Perhaps Mark will say something amusing in my stead.

Your Artist: Mark Sachs Hmm, I dunno. I'll give it a shot, but be warned, it will be very nerdy.

So I was playing City of Heroes today, as I am wont to do, and I noticed something. Here is a map of one of the areas of the city, Independence Port. It's a river-slash-inlet lined with warehouses and factories on both sides. Its most prominent feature is the gigantic Valor Bridge right there in the center, running north-to-south.

Pause.

I only realized today, after playing the game for ages, that this vast suspension bridge, easily the equal of the Brooklyn Bridge or the San Francisco Bay Bridge, does not actually cross the river. It goes lengthwise down the middle of it.

My God. The insanity of it all. Paragon City is renowned for its poor urban design, with everything from freeways to nowhere to a mass transit system with, as someone pointedly described it, two unconnected light rail lines that require a mile-long walk through a bad part of town to transfer, but this is truly the pinnacle. Imagine the billions upon billions of dollars that were spent to construct the Valor Bridge, the years of hard work, and nobody piped up during the design phase to say "hey, guys, have you noticed this bridge doesn't actually connect anything to anything else"? No wonder Paragon City is in such sorry shape. I am in awe.
