Once a civilization discovers how to give individuals the power of
unassisted flight, the look of cities will change. Just as automobiles
presaged the suburb and the paved highway system, individual flight would
change the way we think of cities. Of course, the ability to fly without
large amounts of dangerous machinery is a difficult engineering problem, and
more specifically the spread of such technology to the mainstream is
unlikely to happen soon.
In other news: Beagle 2 may
have failed to call home, but the Spirit Rover landed
safely on Mars and is sending back pictures. I watched a panel of NASA
personnel giving a press conference during the wee hours of the morning, my
time, and the folks on the panel seemed ecstatic.
