I don't like antagonists in a story to be stupid. Even the story's muscle should often have a brain in his head. If he acts in a way that's more-or-less socially acceptable and also in his own best interests (as Mirabeau is doing here), then so much the better. Even a complete jerk like Mirabeau knows when not to push it.
